Fortunately the game really does hold up, and in fact makes for a harrowing, cinematic experience despite a few significant creaks. Its sequel, Dark Souls, was more popular and improved on the first quite a bit, but much of what made the now major series good had already been established. “Souls-like” is practically a genre now, though the originals are unsurprisingly still the nonpareil. Speaking of Bloodborne, the announcement of a Demon’s Souls PS5 remake corroborates recent rumors that Bloodborne would be remastered and brought to Nara4d both PS5 and PC. We didn’t get official news of a Bloodborne remaster during the PS5 event, but the Demon’s Souls PS5 reveal could mean we’ll hear something soon on that front.
This is indeed Bluepoint Games’ mysterious project, first teased by the developer back in March 2018 on these very pages, and it’s a big deal. First released as a PS3 platform exclusive back in 2009, From Software’s Demon’s Souls laid the template for the Soulsborne games to follow and based on the PlayStation 5 reveal we saw last week, we’re in for a treat with its remake. So when the Demon’s Souls remake was announced for PS5, I nearly leapt out of my chair in excitement to play it again (and while actually playing it, I did leap out of my chair). Demon’s Souls was the first game in the Souls saga, released in 2009, and while loved, it was notoriously difficult.
There’s other notable launches like N64 with Mario 64, original Xbox with Halo, and Switch with BotW. PS5 is right up there with the greats IMHO, it’s sooooo good, something for everyone in variety. High quality exclusives that take advantage of PS5 and show off the hardware. I find the “souls” games a genre into themselves and as such are kind of a niche of the action/adventure genre. With these things in mind I doubt this game can be a perfect 10 unless you fall into said niche, this is why I don’t believe in perfect scores. I love action/adventure games…yet I’ve never enjoyed souls games and I doubt this one will change my mind.

That is no longer the case, indeed the fast-loading of the PlayStation 5’s SSD instantly removes one of the greatest frustrations of the original, as death requires but a few seconds wait before you return to the action. Everyone uses wikis when playing a From game, it’s part of what gives the game its unique sense of community, and the Activities seem very much an extension of that. You play as a customisable adventurer trying to lift the curse, until you’re inevitably killed and travel to the otherworldly Nexus, where you begin to realise the true scope of the problem at hand. Bluepoint Games was acquired by PlayStation Studios in 2021 after developing major remakes and remasters of acclaimed titles like Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus. However, since the release of the remake of the precursor to Dark Souls, we haven’t seen more about what the company is developing.
This split between the fidelity of the presentation and the oddity of the game’s systems doesn’t ever quite come together. This isn’t even necessarily a negative; it did little to impact enjoyment of the game and new players likely won’t even notice something is amiss. But it does lend the game a mood that is distinct from the original. A complicated final pair of systems muddies matters somewhat – World Tendency and Character Tendency. Both your character and each world can veer from pure-black to pure-white on a spectrum of tendencies according to your actions, with shifts triggered by NPC-killing or demon-vanquishing.
The Last Of Us Part Ii Remastered: The Kotaku Review
The biggest stumbling block for most with this and other souls games is that the player needs to invest considerably more time and effort to discover all these wonderful little nuances. Finally, bosses can be very intimidating and stressful for new players; however, all the bosses in this game have weaknesses and can easily be defeated with the correct preparation. For example, the Tower Knight’s ankles can be hit to emit a blue glow, eventually making him fall to the ground, allowing players to get to his head and do damage. Further on in the game, the Storm King can be defeated by finding the Storm Ruler weapon in the boss fight arena, which can be used to take the boss down from the sky.
The PS5 couldn’t have kicked off with a much better game than this. While a comprehensive tutorial would feel at-odds with the game’s minimalist nature, perhaps there was still a better way to communicate this bevy of useful information. This is incredible value for the money, and is up there with other Souls titles and games like Monster Hunter World, and other online games that feature constant updates. I expect Souls fans to be playing this right up until the launch of Elden Ring, so the community should be very active until sometime in 2021 (assuming any of them can buy a PS5 since they seem to be non-existent). Whenever I felt that Demon’s Souls could have done more, though, I remembered the Old Monk boss fight. See, the Old Monk is a unique boss in Demon’s Souls which can actually be controlled by another player if they invade your world at the right time.
Fortunately, I didn’t have to dig up a PS3 to dive into it, thanks to Sony’s remake for the PS5. For our current pipeline and workflows, tools like Houdini and Substance have tremendously increased our creation speed and quality over the last couple of titles. It’s been quite impressive to see what our team can accomplish with procedural tools. Our studio’s main tool is Maya, and we have started to tinker with AI tech through some python scripting in both Maya and Houdini.
Demon’s Souls is the standout title among the PS5’s launch lineup, combining tight gameplay, gorgeous graphics and an unforgettable setting. What was confirmed, however, is that Demon’s Souls on PlayStation 5 Pro features a new visual feature, a new contact shadow system. This system is similar to the screen space shadows system employed on base PlayStation 5, which is mostly noticeable in areas with rocks, but shows more fine shadow details that look quite good. It was true in 2009, when developer FromSoftware released the mechanically groundbreaking role-playing game on PlayStation 3, and remains true for Bluepoint Games’ remake, released alongside Sony’s PlayStation 5 this week. A true gem of the PlayStation 4 era, Bloodborne is unlucky enough to be constrained to a single platform, with PC players longing for years for a port or a remake that may never happen. This obstacle aside, Bloodborne has established itself as a must-play soulslike, inspiring many followers who tried to capture its unmistakable vibe.
The biggest question surrounding any remake concerns the necessity of its existence. Was it necessary to take a game as beloved as Demon’s Souls and let a group of developers who had nothing to do with the original put their spin on it? But after playing long enough to defeat every boss and finally lull the Old One back to sleep, I have to say that yes, the remake justifies its existence.
As with some other PS5 games, you can also choose between a cinematic mode, which prioritizes resolution and lighting, and a performance mode, which prioritizes frame rate. I don’t have any particular recommendation between the two; they both do exactly what they advertise. Boletaria is a diverse kingdom, from its soaring towers, to its stifling mines, to its remote island outposts, and you’ll get to see five very distinct parts of it before you’re done.
It seems like Sony may be keeping the door open to a PC version, but wants everyone to be excited about its new console right now. Even if there really are zero PC plans right now, that could always change. The Nvidia leak above was the first evidence that Demon’s Souls may actually be coming to PC, and so far it’s had a very good track record. If you want to explore more K-content on Netflix, you can make use of the platform’s secret codes to filter out Korean titles (67879 for Korean TV shows and 5685 for Korean movies). Netflix also hosts a few K-pop idol group documentaries (Blackpink) and related titles that you may be into if you liked K-Pop Demon Hunters. Celebrity’s plot is a breath of fresh air, and the show, led by powerful performances, does a good job of exploring the dark side of fame.
One example of staying true to the original’s allure is that the bounds of the collision were not altered. Enemy pathing and combat encounters fundamentally happen within the same space. Most of the collision adjustments accounted for new architecture and for the player and the camera to move smoothly through the world.
